Verdi estaba muy orgulloso de esta ópera, que compuso en la primera parte de su carrera, pocos años antes de algunos de sus grandes éxitos. El compositor quiso crear un drama que estuviera a la altura de la obra de Shakespeare, al que él admiraba profundamente.
